A true ambassador of European music during the first half of the Age of Enlightenment, German composer Georg Friedrich Handel imported Italian opera to London, where he settled to make a career. It was here that he premiered Orlando at the King's Theatre in 1733 with Farinelli’s great castrato rival Senesino.

After Mitridate in the 24-25 season, the Opéra de Lausanne continues to honor Mozart's early works. At the age of 15, he debuted Ascanio in Alba at the Teatro Regio Ducale in Milan in 1771: a serenade, in his words, a veritable theatrical celebration!

Lit up by bursts of exquisite lyricism, this dark tale is a further sign of the affinities between Alexander von Zemlinsky and Oscar Wilde, after The Florentine Tragedy (1917). With a libretto by Georg C. Klaren based on The Birthday of the Infanta, in which a beautiful young princess receives a dwarf as a birthday present, this dazzling one-act tragedy with the pithy title The Dwarf premiered in Cologne in 1922.

Rigoletto sealed the European public's love affair with Giuseppe Verdi from the moment of its 1851 premiere at La Fenice in Venice. Before Il trovatore and La traviata, the first opus in his mature trilogy is a promise of emotion and great operatic moments.
